Event of the Week: IM Florida

Panama City Beach will play host to the Florida Ironman this Saturday, Nov. 1st. You'll catch quite a few Austinites participating in the 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and 26.2 mile run, including J&A blogger Michelle Garel and her husband Michael. Local Pro Triathletes, Jason McMillian and Richard Freer will also be representing.

The 2 loop swim in the Gulf of Mexico is a little bit different than most triathlons in that after the first loop, the participants must exit the water and do the turnaround on the beach. The bike portion is flat and fast, but wind could be a challenge. The tri concludes with a 2 loop marathon course.

Event of the Week: Texas Tri

The Texas Tri is one of those races that has been around for years. Once held at the beginning of the triathlon season, this event (directed by our friend Nick Seidel) now takes place at the tail end of the season. This year it has been selected as the 2008 Texas State Championship and is open to all - no qualifying time required. So if you're not tied up in the Distance Challenge, then come out to Canyon Lake this Saturday. Although it's a "championship" it's still low-key and fun. And like last year, you'll catch some of the J&A crew volunteering on the bike course, helping with timing, and breaking down transition.

Here's the info:

Saturday, October 18, 2008
8:00 AM

The Texas Triathlon takes place at Canyon Park on Canyon Lake, Texas. This intermediate distance triathlon (1.5K S, 42K B, 9.5K R) will be challenging, scenic and fun.

Lake Water Temp 73-76, accurate water temp will be taken weekend before the race and posted here. 78 and under is legal wet suit temp for age group triathlon.

**********************************************************************************
Another option for this weekend is the Harbor Half Marathon down in Corpus. This isn't a new race, but it is newly directed by our friend Ed Cheatham. He's been around the tri scene for years, including officiating many local triathlons. It's sure to be a great race, so check it out and tell all your South Texas friends about it.
