Earth Day Freebie

To help celebrate Earth Day this Friday, April 22nd, we're giving away a reusable & biodegradable J&A water bottle if you bring in an item for our Bicycle Re-Cycle Project. That means you can bring in an old bike tube or tire, energy bar wrappers, a bike wheel, bike chain, an old bike frame or pretty much anything bike related that you no longer need and trade it in for a new water bottle from Jack & Adam's.* Refill and reuse the bottle many times instead of buying bottled water!

As they say, "One man's trash is another man's treasure" and that is definitely true with our Bicycle Re-Cycle bins; these bins are heavily used and people are very grateful for what they find within. So bring stuff in on Friday & get hooked up with a free bottle!

*limit one per person

Steiner Ride, Shiner Edition

Every Sunday, Jack & Adam's Bicycles hosts a free group ride that is open to all levels of riders. The ride starts at 8:30AM sharp and finishes at the shop with free breakfast tacos. Once a month, however, the ride begins and ends at the Steiner Steakhouse.

On Sunday, May 1st, 2011 the J&A Steiner Ride is a special Shiner Edition. The Shiner Edition is to help promote the upcoming Shiner Ride on May 7th. So finish the ride and drink some FREE Shiner beer!

More J&A Steiner Ride Details:
There are three groups during these rides: Advanced, Intermediate, and the No Drop entry level ride. We will roll out of the Steiner Steakhouse parking lot at 8:30 a.m. for two distances of 15 miles and 33 miles. You are welcome to add on if you like. At the end of each ride there are 2 choices of long climbs to go down and back on. Jack Murray of Jack & Adams and Sid Steiner of Steiner Steakhouse will be on hand as 2 of the many shop ride leaders. Post ride, half price brunch will be available courtesy of Steiner Steakhouse. All items on the brunch menu sit between $7 an $15 bucks. So for half off you can eat for $3.50 to $7.50 per person. There will also be live music on the patio that overlooks Lake Travis. If you want, bring your running shoes and do a run after the ride.

We hope to see you out there for the special Shiner Edition on May 1st!

The Nutrition of Sleep

Written by Meredith Terranova:

How many times do you try to convince yourself that you are doing just fine on 5-6 hours of sleep?

As you send out that last email, watch 30 more minutes of TV, or fold one more load of laundry before you turn the lights out, let's take a look at how a lack of sleep is effecting your body and metabolism.

Insufficient sleep causes a disruption of the appetite hormones leptin and ghrelin which direct fat metabolism. When these hormones become resistant to cues from the brain due to dietary abuse or lack of deep sleep, fat is not released efficiently and remains stored as excess weight in the body. A study published in the journal Sleep, reveal that teenagers who received less than 8 hours of sleep per night consumed 2.2% more dietary fat on average.

Insufficient or disrupted sleep causes levels of the critical appetite hormones, leptin and ghrelin to fluctuate leading to increased hunger. Normally, leptin signals the brain when you've had enough and it's time to stop eating.

Conversely, ghrelin sends the cue that you're hungry and ready to eat. In studies where sleep was deprived and subjects received less than 7 hours per night, leptin levels dropped and ghrelin rose, resulting in the urge to overeat. There was a direct correlation between the number of hours slept and the desire to eat too much. Those who were most sleep deprived had an overwhelming desire to eat, and didn't know when to stop.

More importantly, these participants desired high carbohydrates and other calorie rich foods nearly twice as much as those who slept at least 8 hours. Lack of sleep causes metabolic disruption affecting how body fat is stored and influences our hormones causing us to overeat. The best way to avoid weight gain from sleep deprivation is to plan a minimum of 7 hours and no more than 9 hours of sleep each night. Extensive research concludes that this is the proper zone to ensure optimal health and avoid weight gain from hormonal imbalance.

Additionally, you can help by making a conscious effort to limit or eliminate refined carbohydrates and sugar from your diet, especially at night time. This will become easier to do as you normalize your sleep patterns since your desire for excessive carbohydrates will subside.

The body performs many essential repair functions while we sleep which lead to improved immune function and a disease free life.

J&A Mountain Bikes!

All right, so that's a brilliant old advertisement for Lazer Helmets that I've hijacked. But seriously... Mountain bikes are incredible fun and there are so many great places to ride in (or near) Austin: Walnut Creek, The Greenbelt, City Park, Reimer's and Rocky Hill Ranch to name just a few. FELT has always made great bicycles and their off road line up, like their tri bikes, is no exception.

“But do you have the room for all of those extra bikes?” You ask, incredulously.

“Are you familiar with a game called, Bike Tetris?” I respond, thusly.

X-Terra events are popping up all over the place and it seems like such a blast that I reckon the whole X-Terra scene is gonna blow up in the next few years. We've got 26'ers, 29'ers, Hardtails and Full suspension models for you at the shop. Swing by and I'll tell you what all those words and numbers mean or even let you try out a few models.

Even if you're a dyed-in-the-wool pavement junky, mountain biking is a great intensity workout that always improves your bike handling skills and strength. I know from experience that pushing a thirty-pound mountain bike around City Park is a wicked arm workout. In addition, it turns out that the full body clenching from fear of imminent death is great for your core.
